Discussing why the Obama administration failed to pursue certain economic priorities Biden preferred, the then-former vice president said the team was “beholden to the Silicon Valley.” The Valley guys, he claimed, simply “didn’t want” the policies he favored. He called it a “harsh thing to say,” then said it anyway.
This is textbook corporatism: the coercive power of the executive branch appearing subordinate to, but most likely financially benefiting from, the money-making interests of a handful of technology corporations. Not through formal lobbying disclosures or campaign contributions alone, Obama is significantly more wealthy today than he was when he took office, but through the quiet capture of the people who actually set the agenda.
